I'm working on a overhaul mod to "fix" that. These difficulties disappear later on replaced by insanely overpowered economy and hardly any challenge militarily from the ai. So the most cost effective killing of elite/special units is always missile troops.Īll that said, those are the many things I hate about early game tw. As long as you can have 2 - 3 minutes to shoot the enemy, they will die, even elites. An effective tactic is to basically get a few defensive melee units (hoplites for example), and then 10+ javelins or archer units in your army. Missile units are a bit OP especially early on. Like they will kill 5 men, lose 60, and flee. Eastern spears, tribal levy, rorarii, all suck horribly badly in manually fought battles. Spamming garbage tier 1 units only works for autoresolve. Once you grow up a province with food first, wealth second, then purchase military buildings.įinally, with a rock hard home base 25 turns in, build elite stacks and attack. Disband most of your starting units, capture only a few closeby easy territories and don't make any powerful enemies. This is a bit of a gimmick, but if it's something that intrigues you, check them out and build an army of gallic hunter / longbow hunters.Tw is annoying early on because you need food to not die but you have limited build slots (so spending all buildings on farms can't work). That is, bow units that can remain hidden while firing. The only other faction worth mentioning is the Arverni (and maybe one other barb faction? Can't remember) who have access to snipers. Especially with their faction bonus, and if you don't have the Nomad Tribe DLC then they're very similar to the nomadic tribes (but also have a good number of ground troops). ![]() The only other way to get Cretans is via mercs, and Carthage can maintain them much more cheaply than other factions. Rome can recruit Auxiliary Cretan Archers once it's conquered Hellas, which gives it missile dominance over essentially every faction in the game. ![]() ![]() The best archer unit is without a doubt the Cretan Archer. If you want a playthrough that utilises the best archer unit in the game, then my recommendation is either Rome or Carthage. They also don't have foot archers, but you'll have mounted archers making up the bulk of most of your armies. They're only available via DLC, and all (unfortunately) play pretty much exactly the same, with only minor differences. If you want a playthrough that emphasises ranged combat, then the steppe factions are your best bet. Think we missed one? Give us a Modmail and suggest new Subreddits to add to the lists!
